Overland Navigator 3.0 - Introduction

Overland Navigator 3.0 will be designed with input from the Overlanding community at every step.  An open discussion.

This blog will be used to share each design document including use-cases, features, usability, and connectivity.  I hope many of you will participate throughout the design, and that together we can create the premier Overland Navigation application.

The best way to stay up to date is to sign up for our RSS feed,  "Like" us on Facebook, or "Follow" us on Twitter.  Each time there's a new design document we'll share it on Facebook and Twitter so you can follow the link back here.  Please help us get the word out about the project.

Kinda lost track of where to post recommended upgrades.

1. scale bar, along bottom in miles/km, selectable on/off

2. north up/norm orientation; runs map in either north up for easy reading of map print (like now) or spins map in direction of travel to allow easy location of terrain features and position checking enroute.

3. data block; displays various data (selectable) like speed, heading, ave moving speed, sunset/sunrise, present time, maybe up to four items with entire block selectable on/off.

a. a neat feature would be a quick access/resetable odometer which you toggle/reset with one key to monitor leg distances. "from last intersection start leg dist to upcoming bridge", reset, "next leg is 1.8 miles to intersection".

4. would like to see the map pack go up to 500k scale for a little longer reach route planning. Many times I am limited in long-range view to decide route to next dest. Slewing gets dicey while driving because it resets quickly and cant see alternate routes on screen.

5. ability to set opacity on the recorded route line. When recording route the line obscures map details easily.

Hi Craig:

I am very excited about this development. I acutally rambled on and on to my wife about it after seeing the annoucement on Expo. I checked with you about a year ago when I got an iPad, and was disappointed that I couldn't use ON. I currently use the iPad for off-road navigation, but have to use a couple of different apps to get close to what I am looking for. I also do a fair amount of ocean sailing, so I am accoustomed to using chartplotters, and was hoping to get the iPad to function as an Overland chartplotter. I am defintely in once the new software is available, and would be happy to alpha test if that would help.

I second Shoguns' comments above, and would be particularly interested in a quick access resetable odometer. As a friendly amendment to his recommendations, it would be nice if resetting did not have to rest the total trip mileage (sort of like the ability to track a Trip A and Trip B on some vehicles, but not my Jeep). It was a pain on a Mojave Road trip last fall to have to recalculate mileage constantly because of side trips and the fact that my odometer is not accurate due to oversized tires.

Good luck, and thanks for pursuing this.

So Craig, Are you saying that you will no longer write this software for windows? And if so then how long will you support the windows software? I ve been running this for a year and bought a tablet specifically for running this in windows... Now I am going to eventually have to buy an IPAD? if i chose to continue using your product.?

@Doyle - I hope to develop an Overland Navigator 3.0 compatible client for Windows sometime after I complete the iOS/iPad/iPhone version. iOS is now the primary development target though.

What I have found from your site, it is actually highly content. You have spent long time for this post.

Craig,

I was a current user of your windows S/W and then migrated to the Ipad using a couple of other apps. But I loved your Overland S/W and I'm looking forward to your release.

What I'd like to see is the ability to import gpx files via the iTunes drag and drop feature. This lets you share previously made tracks between your S/W and other devices as well as between friends who have the S/W.

It would be great to see the iTunes drag and drop feature used to download map data also. I'm using one app that takes up to 12 hours to download map data. The download time is really dependent on my ISO speed but having the option to download maps ahead of time to a laptop and then import them would be a great plus.

Just some food for thought.

PS: How is the design going?
